In 6th grade art class, we try to fit in as much as we can into our short 30 days together. During that time, in addition to covering all state standards, our goal is to make art pieces that we are truly proud of while experimenting with a variety of media and art making methods such as clay, plaster, soft pastel, sharpie, three types of watercolor, paper weaving, scratch board, drawing using linear hatching, printmaking and more.
To prepare ourselves for future art classes, we practice art studio habits and familiarize ourselves with the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Color, Value, Space, Form, and Texture) and Principles of Design (Balance, Unity, Variety Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, and Proportion). We also touch upon various well-known artists and their art pieces from the past and present times. Some of these artists include, Yayoi Kusama, Akiane Kramarik, Kamwei Fong, Vincent van Gogh, Jeff Koons, Claus Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Frida Kahlo, Leonardo Davinci, Salvador Dali, Grant Wood, Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keeffe, Claude Monet, Jen Stark, and many more.
My hope for 6th grade students is that they find excitement, gain confidence, and build a good foundation in art.
